Expert summary
LED lighting utilizes light-emitting diodes (LEDs) as the source of illumination rather than electrical filaments or gas. Since the light in an LED is emitted from a solid object such as a block of semiconductor rather than from a vacuum or gas tube as in incandescent light bulbs or fluorescent lamps, it is called solid state lighting. LED lamps are usually clusters of LEDs in a suitable housing. They also come in various shapes. Red LEDs became commercially available in the 1960s. By 1970s they were in wide use as indicators in different kinds of equipment. Indicator LEDs became very popular as they have longer lifetimes and run on lower voltage.

Quite scientific, and too much of an overview to 'just' call it an introduction.
